Not Tonight

Troubled I lay aside my book
And uneasy rise from rest.
Secrets heavy in my chest.
My spirit held on tender-hook
I pace the room as firm hands shook
As thoughts unclean began to nest
To sing my fall, like man possessed,
With discord song like filthy rooks.

I shut my ears against these calls
Breath short and sharp until they fade
They vanish with the breaking day.
Only then, rebuild my walls
And reweave composure frayed
Not tonight, my self betray.
