Character Information

Known History

The Brujah called "Niemand" is a vampire of questionable mortal origin who very well might have been embroiled in any conspiracy theory you see on a bad History Channel documentary. During the 1950s, he would be tasked - first as Greta von Riesling's ghoul - with working alongside the Ventrue "Le Hire" to recover much of the art stolen by the now-defunct regime which he had been an agent of. His torturous embrace in the 1950s was both a blessing from a Kindred spirit for him to seek redemption, and viciously mocking retribution for the part ex-sympathizers like him had played in Nazi crimes. The cowardly complexities motivating Niemand's collusion with that hated regime would not begin to be admitted many years later to other Kindred spirits Niemand would meet, such as Lydia Laurant and Ewa Zofia, but Niemand and other Kindred of the coming decades would nonetheless (certainly misguidedly) use the "Nazi monster" reputation to his occasional advantage despite the self-hatred it invoked to do so. He was forbidden from using his own name by his Sire, who dubbed him "Niemand" (Nobody). It would be decades before he was allowed to resume a version of his given name by Prince Eric Kein of Columbus. Niemand continued to serve as courier for the court of West Berlin, and recovery specialist allying with various Kindred to accomplish his Sire's tasks. In the 1970s, he followed leads to Dallas, Texas, where he worked alongside one of its hounds, J.D. "Ranger" Worth, to stop a cadre of Nazi ghouls and their regnant Sabbat pack from spiriting a cache of stolen art to Mexico City (where the art had been intended to be used in rituals against the specific leaders of the Camarilla). By the 1990s, he had been Acknowledged and allowed to Embrace at least one Childe. A friend of that Childe proved to be an asset against a coven of technocratic Mages assaulting Brujah and Ventrue interests in Berlin, so Greta embraced Melina Hunter at Niemand's request.

Sort of a tomb raider for more powerful Kindred, Niemand infiltrated and stole artifacts from Setites and Tremere in Cleveland, Ohio. Following similar activity in Columbus, he disappeared for several months before returning with the goal of winning back the comradeship of his own clanmates. During the time he served as Scourge in Columbus, he methodically eliminated any un-Acknowledged Kindred who showed up - some of whom Viktor would insist be kept as what-if prisoners. Another period of torpor followed a spite rant against him by an offended clanmate, whose charges Niemand did not dispute (but which charges did not leave the rant). Being both challenged and benefitted by the mentorships of local elders Bernard and Maggie, Niemand would dabble in the superstitions and paths of morality of numerous other associates (Bernard among them), at least intrigued by the origins and possibilities of faith - though only faith in the Camarilla would prove lasting. Intermittently (when Viktor von Steinwitz was not) serving as Primogen in Columbus, Niemand stepped down from the position after a gruesome incident in Cleveland (where he killed the childe of Archon Reuhe as Brujah he was allied with acted as soldiers in a Praxis). He was stripped of three Status for the incident by Prince Brighton Hughes, spending many months in penance during which he submitted to philosophies espoused by the Child of Haqim, Kunya Nassir, though Nassir would die within the coming years. Before resting in torpor (he claims) for several months, Niemand was named a Sword Bearer of Columbus, and publicly reclaimed a version of his actual name - Magnus Kohler.

Replaced as primogen by his own anarch-sympathizing child, Magnus has spent some time traveling - usually among the anarchs, trying to get to the bottom of Gunther's duplicity. Gunther Bjornson was diablerized by William Satine (who replaced Gunther as Brujah Primogen) on Eric Kein's order. At a world-wide rant on Crete, Magnus was among the voices (along with Jo Satine, who by then was Primogen of Columbus) refusing to accept the Antitribu as Brujah and demanding that they be uninvited, something Critias relented to and sent the Sabbat Brujah packing. Ironically, years earlier, Brighton Hughes, Viktor von Steinwitz, and Niemand had stood by clanmate Norman Samuelson, who had been rendered "dispassionate" during the Year of Fire. Magnus continued to insist, despite his hatred for William Satine, that even the dispassionate were Brujah by blood and belonging.

Magnus Kohler appreciated Mia Gunn (a member of a one-time "MC" Niemand had maintained an alliance with, which was instrumental in revealing the crimes of Guy Auvergne and also produced Lloyd Lionsigh) taking Praxis from his enemy, who presumably died in the process, preventing William Satine (who Magnus and others had upheld was a serial diablerist) from continuing success in splitting his own clan locally. Magnus would take years gathering more of his Clan to return to the city. When he did resurface, William Satine's Childe, Grant Collier, had returned to the Domain shortly beforehand and assumed the role of Primogen (which Grant would keep into the regime of Prince Roberts), perhaps precipitating the conflict of personalities that would ensue - though Niemand suspected the cause was something more as he and his allies were trying to cope with furious visions shared by most members of his clan. "Team Brujah" (as Kohler and his friends nostalgically dubbed themselves), tried to establish a set of skills that could benefit the city when, if history would repeat itself, Brujah would be called on to vindicate the city in blood.

Character Inspirations

NAZIS ARE UN-AMERICAN - AND EVIL. The premise of this character was a person the player knew, an older Austrian guy who was the only member of a part-Jewish family who had chosen to return to Europe in order to join the Nazis, then spent the rest of his life rationalizing what he had really meant to do and wishing he "had known what they were really doing", as if everyone in the3 world didn't know. Nazis are monsters. When the character was created, "Nazis" were perceived extinct - either the brunt of jokes against bigots or the villains in campy horror movies. Unfortunately, bigots in the West are no longer even pretending to be lie low, and the challenge is to steer an 18-year-old character away from the subject matter without "giving up" on the intricacies and investments of a character's story that began in a very different epoch of real-world understanding.
