Thomas Heard Poetry (Hunger)
Carnival I sit astride electric steed, Lost in carousel whirling. Rides and dust, playing, frenzied The sun so bright and blinding. Now I walk these well worn lanes Where once I ran in younger days Of joyous song, nothing remains, Desp’rate carnies and rides decayed. But comes a child, face full and bright Laughter riding with them Smiling, I turn back to my night Unwilling to my past condemn. In nights of trouble, strife and grief Savor joy, like youth, too brief.
Hunger
A hunger like fire burns from inside
While in my veins, my blood is ice
I fear that this beast will not be denied
Vermillion waves come in like a tide
Drowning me in inhuman vice
A hunger like fire burns from inside
With deep sullen growl, glowing, red-eyed
This hunger felt lets known it's price
I fear that this beast will not be denied
Enslaved to this passion, fuel I provide
Gainst wish to be controlled, precise
A hunger like fire burns from inside
Vainly labored, and helplessly vied
Strive to follow elder's advice
I fear that this beast will not be denied
All fast fleeting, reason subsides
The Man is gone, lost in a trice
A hunger like fire burns from inside
I fear that this beast will not be denied
