Across the wastes

Across the wastes, I walk in chains,
Pulled at both hand and feet
Fainting in the endless heat
My limbs are bound as puppet’s reins.

I glance ahead, and see the line
Of those who’s fate I share
And well note the golden chains they wear
Bound as kin, all affine.

I stop and give my chains a jerk
Behind, children strive to keep pace
For in this endless lineal race
All are bound, so none may shirk.

Our destination is unknown
Our leadership, a mystery
But tied are we by blood and history
We each must walk, bound and alone.
